NEW YORK (HedgeWorld.com) - As a result of Moody's Investors Service's downgrade of Merrill Lynch & Co. to A2 from A1, the ratings agency has put six gas prepayment bonds with a total value of $5.3 billion on watch for possible downgrade, as well. The reason, according to a Monday [July 21] release from Moody's, is that "Merrill Lynch & Co. serves as gas purchase agreement guarantor and therefore each transaction's rating is substantially based on Merrill Lynch & Co.'s rating." The gas supplier is Merrill subsidiary Merrill Lynch Commodities. Gas and electricity prepayment bonds are among the many niche structured transactions developed in recent years.
