Football Y. VOTE POSTPONED: Governor George Pataki has postponed a vote on the New York Jets stadium proposed for Manhattan's West Side and central to the city's 2012 Olympic bid. The proposal was removed from the state Public Authorities Control Board agenda Tuesday night at the request of Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and is likely to be rescheduled. A vote was to have taken place Wednesday.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York City's bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympics suffered a setback Monday when a powerful state board rejected critical public funding for a $2 billion stadium on Manhattan's West side. The state Public Authorities Control Board vote came after Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver came out against the plan for $300 million in public funding for the stadium that would also be home to the New York Jets.

With Michael Bloomberg's Olympic dreams snuffed out like a torch in the closing ceremonies, let's face facts: The mayor's bid to lure the Olympics to New York City in 2012 was never really about the Olympics at all. Bloomberg knew full well that Paris had the best chance of capturing the games, but he used the campaign as supporting rationale to build a stadium for the Jets and a conference center on the West Side. All the while, he hoped the Public Authorities Control Board would approve construction of the $2 billion project before the International Olympic Committee voted to host the games somewhere else.

ALBANY, N.Y. A $4 billion redevelopment project that could reshape Brooklyn with an arena for the New Jersey Nets, office towers and thousands of apartments was approved Wednesday after months of maneuvering among New York state's top political leaders. The state Public Authorities Control Board voted unanimously to authorize the Atlantic Yards development, a sprawling reuse of an area near a downtown Brooklyn rail yard that would include a new home for the Nets.

The state Public Service Commission today denied the Long Island Power Authority's May 3 request to review its fuel and purchased power surcharge and executive compensation packages. The state utility regulator cited a lack of jurisdiction over LIPA billing practices as the main reason for denying LIPA's request. The PSC said LIPA is generally exempt from PSC oversight, and instead monitored by the Public Authorities Control Board and State Comptroller Alan Hevesi, who in 2004 and 2005 issued reports criticizing LIPA's budget procedures and finances.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared Friday that he would "work through the weekend" at trying to persuade two recalcitrant legislators to remove the last remaining government hurdle for the proposed $2 billion West Side football stadium. Bloomberg said he thought two days of negotiations with New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno could produce a vote by the Public Authorities Control Board on Monday. Each lawmaker controls one of its three voting members.
