The contemporary fire department has a mission-critical role within the jurisdiction it serves to ensure that its "first responders" are prepared to effectively, efficiently, and safely respond to and mitigate an enhanced array of types of emergency incidents. The fire chief is responsible for managing the department, both on and off the incident scene, in a manner that successfully and fully responds to the community needs.
