The JLP Spokesperson on Local Government gained prominence in 2001 when she was asked by then leader of the Opposition Edward Seaga to take control when Michael Beinavis took leave of absence. Later, when the PNP's Danny Melville resigned, she offered herself for candidacy, won the by-election and has been representing St. Ann North Eastern ever since. In the recent election, she won with 10,568 votes to the 8,923 received by PNP candidate Oswest Senior-Smith. According to the PNP's website, much of the development that has taken place in South Central St. Catherine, must be attributed to the sitting MP, [Sharon Hay-Webster], who has placed education on the top of her priority list. She's credited with upgrading several schools in the fiercely competitive constituency, which is describe...

TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd emerged the big winner of the night when it bagged the coveted `Excellence Award' of NAfMA 2007, beating nine other finalists. The award was accepted by Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, the CEO of Telekom Malaysia, from guest-of-honour Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. NAfMA came into being when the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) came together to initiate it. The Vale Royal talks, initiated in the P.J. Patterson era, is a good tool of governance. I've maintained in this column that an Opposition party has to be integrally involved in working with the Government of the day on critical national issues affecting the country. Such collaboration opens up a forum for a wider pool of ideas as to how to deal with problems and reduces unnecessary contention about broad national goals. It's for that reason that I've thrown my support behind Prime Minister Bruce Golding's proposal to have key parliamentary committees chaired by Opposition members. The implementation of that idea will bring about meaningful changes in how the business of Parliament is conducted. This model has worked well for the Public Accounts Committee and there is no reason why it c...

AUDLEY SHAW, chairman of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC), firmly refused on Tuesday, February 24 to stand down from that position pending the outcome of a legal battle involving his family business. Instead, Mr. Shaw, the Opposition spokesman on finance, blasted his detractors, charging that he was being targeted for 'unscrupulous purposes' with the issues being used as a political weapon against him. Regarding reports of several 'bounced' cheques emanating from the business, Mr. Shaw acknowledged that this was so, blaming it on the 'lack of calibration, but, he said, they were promptly made good 'at great sacrifice'.
De Beers, the world's biggest diamond company, denied allegations that it evaded South African export duties when it shipped gems to London in 1993. We have comprehensive evidence of every single stone that was exported from South Africa from at least 1990 onwards," the company's commercial director, Bruce Cleaver, told parliament's public accounts committee in Cape Town Wednesday. De Beers has documentation proving it was exempt from paying duty, he added.
The audit team, led by Desmond Hayle, architect, was appearing before Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for the first time and on Tuesday, October 10, stood by its report which it had submitted to Parliament in August. Desmond Hoyle (left), architect and chairman of the forensic audit team, consults with DL Allan Kirton, former Permanent secretary and member of the forensic audit team. The team appeared before Parliament's Public Account Committee on Tuesday October 10, to answer questions on the controversial Sandals Whitehouse project.
LONDON - British lawmakers criticized the problem-plagued memorial fountain to Princess Diana for poor management and uncontrolled costs that have gone $3.5 million higher than projected. The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee criticized "basic project management failures" that have driven the cost of the fountain in London's Hyde Park to $9 million, from an original budget of $5.2 million.
