DAYTON -- They came dressed in Santa Claus suits and filed into taverns, giving new meaning to the term Christmas "spirit.
All that was required for the Santa pub crawl on Saturday, Dec. 20, was to come dressed in red and white and be ready for some laughs. The participants immediately commenced the lighthearted banter. "Are you with us?" Mike Dadaian called out as he and fellow Santa-attired companion Chris Daily entered the gathering's starting point, the Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers eatery at 1060 Patterson Road, and spotted four similarly dressed Kris Kringles seated in a booth.

To walk through Halcyon on a Friday night, its tables crowded with brimming bowls of mussels and iced seafood towers, its bar jammed with jabbering neighbors, you'd never guess all of this came to be because of ... a parking lot.
Chris and Sharon Egan, the owners of Montclair's wildly popular Irish pub Egan & Sons, needed parking. So when the building next door and its adjacent lot went up for sale, they jumped -- with no intention of starting a second restaurant. But they soon realized they could use part of the building to expand the pub, and began pondering a second dining concept that wouldn't compete. There was no magical inspiration, just a general feeling that having to drive to Point Pleasant for a good lobster was ridiculous. And so in September 2008, they opened a seafood bras...

You've got to love the concept of "the local." I'm talking about the everybody-knows-your-name neighborhood bar whose wall decorations are etched in your brain and whose bar stool feels like an old friend. Perhaps it's more a British thing. As the son of a longtime viewer of "Coronation Street," the legendary U.K. soap opera centered around a pub called the Rovers Return, I see the concept as far more British Isles than Brooklyn or Brandt.
I've never had a local, but if I was going to start, I might consider the Snyder Bar & Grill. Besides the fact that I live within walking distance, my first-ever visit left me in good spirits, charmed by the establishment's suburban aesthetic.

Al Maes said he was supposed to have his first lesson today, a 55th birthday present from his wife, and will likely be out $390.

South of Beale is not a restaurant, not a bistro, not a cafe and not a bar. It's a gastropub, and apparently that's difficult to define.
On its stylish Web site, South of Beale has a window that offers a series of definitions for gastropub: "combining a pub with the concept of gastronomy"; an "environment with a strong emphasis on chef-driven food, paired with good ale & wine, in a casual setting"; a "public house with high quality food a step above the basic 'pub grub'.
