This study is the first to examine exposure to trauma and the development of PTSD prospectively among heroin users. Participants were 309 heroin users followed up over two years as part of the Australian Treatment Outcome Study. Forty-one percent reported trauma exposure, and 5.8% developed PTSD over the follow-up period. Baseline characteristics that independently predicted trauma exposure were younger age and a history of imprisonment. Those who developed PTSD did not differ from those with a history of PTSD at baseline on any characteristics. Those who developed PTSD were, however, more likely to have a history of attempted suicide compared to those with no history of PTSD. These findings suggest that there is a need for trauma prevention programs particularly targeting younger peopl...

A trial judge improperly asked prospective jurors if they could put the television show "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" aside and "convict a defendant without scientific evidence," Maryland's top court held Friday in overturning two second-degree murder convictions.
In its 7-0 decision, the Court of Appeals said now-retired Baltimore City Circuit Judge Charles G. Bernstein's question during jury selection deprived Jamal Charles and Dwayne Drake of a fair trial because it "suggested that the [potential] jury's only option was to convict, regardless of whether scientific evidence was adduced at trial.

This study examines intergenerational continuity in drug use across three generations of respondents in the same family. The data are from the Rochester Intergenerational Study, an ongoing, prospective, multi-generational investigation using a community-based sample. Our findings indicate that there is intergenerational continuity in drug use for Generation 2, or G2 daughters, but not sons, of G1 mothers. Use by G3 is significantly influenced by both G2 mothers and G1 grandmothers. However, for children of G2 fathers, neither prior generation's substance use is significantly related to G3 use. There is some indication that the absence of an effect from G2 fathers to G3 drug use is due to the number of nonresident fathers in the sample.

Trial lawyers have helped create a cottage industry of jury consultants who, for considerable fees, assist them in identifying jurors who have either an inherent bias against certain matters or a leaning in favor of others. "Voir dire" is the name of the process of questioning prospective jurors to determine if they should be disqualified either for bias or for another reason using one of counsel's peremptory challenges. If lawyers could engage in this process to select the judge hearing the case, they would. The more difficult question is how to engage in an effective due diligence investigation of prospective arbitrators. It requires planning and follow through. After receiving the list of arbitrator candidates from the arbitration administrator and narrowing the candidates down to th...

RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina has told the NCAA that three people acted as "prospective agents" by providing benefits to players in connection with the ongoing investigation into the program, including one who works for NFL agent Drew Rosenhaus.
The school named Rosenhaus employee Michael Katz in documents sent to the NCAA to report violations as part of the process to reinstate players suspended or held out of games due to the probe. Katz is listed on the Rosenhaus Sports Representation Web site as the firm's director of marketing and client services.

A trial judge may tell prospective jurors that a criminal trial is unlike an episode of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and that scientific evidence is not needed for conviction, the Court of Special Appeals has held.
In its 3-0 decision, the appellate court upheld the second- degree murder convictions of Dwayne Drake and Jamal Charles for the murder of a birthday girl's father in Southwest Baltimore three years ago.

District Attorney [Richard A. Brown] said that the prosecution was the result of a three-year investigation conducted by the District Attorney's Office in conjunction with the New York Stock Exchange. The investigation determined that although initially the investment strategy explained by the defendants to prospective investors as the "covered calls" or "covered options" strategy appeared to succeed, in late 2000, the strategy eventually soured and the defendants began using new investors' monies to pay the monthly promised returns. In pleading guilty today, the defendants admitted that they utilized the tragedy of September 11th as an excuse, claiming that the fund had failed because of economic conditions. However, a lengthy and thorough forensic analysis of all the bank and brokerag...
