HELENA, Mont. - An Interior Department report released Thursday identifies 101 high-priority conservation projects across the nation as part of President Barack Obama's initiative to protect public lands, but it says most will have to find funding somewhere besides the U.S. government. The report outlines two projects in each state and one in the District of Columbia in various stages of development, ranging from the creation of an all-season trail system in Alaska's Denali National Park to the completion of a 32-mile trail through urban areas in central Florida.

Aquatech International Corp. was founded 30 years ago to support the steel industry. Now the growing, Canonsburg-based water purification technology company is focusing on the oil and natural gas industry, and plans to hire 50 engineers, chemists, manufacturing workers and others this year. Working with companies that use large quantities of water to drill for gas in the Marcellus shale region of Pennsylvania "gives us a chance to bring our global solutions to a local market," CEO Venkee Sharma said Tuesday.
The Charleston metro area saw a 15 percent increase in construction employment during the past year, the fifth-highest jump in the nation, according to a report released Tuesday. Charleston's construction employment boost - 2,300 new jobs - was fueled mostly by publicly funded projects, such as schools, bridge repairs and replacements, water and sewer lines and Yeager Airport renovations, industry leaders said.
In the wake of one of the worst years on record for investment in new real estate projects, a new report and its authors paint downtown Baltimore as "holding its own" in a rough economy. The State of Downtown report, which has become an annual tradition from the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, shows that downtown has $1.46 billion in projects under construction, about half of what was being built last year, and that most of that investment is concentrated in a few major projects.
Retail vacancies rose in Oklahoma City this year despite a slowly recovering national economy, according to a new report by Sperry Van Ness. While Tulsa escaped that trend with a slight decline in 2010 shopping center vacancies, its market rental rates fell while Oklahoma City's remained stable, said SVN Retail Investment Adviser Ryan McNeill.
