The term "non-profit" has been criticized as fiscally inaccurate and negative, when the goal of these organizations is, in fact, positive. The US Internal Revenue Service Code state that earnings gained by "non-profit" organizations may not benefit individuals or stakeholders, which neglects a broader, social-context definition of the term "stakeholder". This paper presents a new conceptual framework for social impact, "social profit," which can be a goal shared by for-profit enterprises and non-profit organizations ("pure social profit enterprises"). A range of social profit enterprises (SPEs), SPE functions, and methods for determining the strategic value of social profit ventures are identified. By rebranding nomenclature used in discussing social good and utilizing the rigor of for-...

Managers in organizations make operational investment decisions all the time. These investment decisions have an impact on the bottom line. Typically, not all such decisions are evaluated for their impact. The authors propose a dynamic model based on the service-profit chain to evaluate the impact of the investments made in operational attributes, on market penetration of the organization over time. They then operationalize this model to demonstrate applicability by identifying dimensions and observed variables that are measurable.

This paper reports on a research project investigating the trade-offs between on-shelf availability and profitability of a major, perishable food category in the context of substitutability and consumer loyalty. Assuming that products with high profitability should have high availability the matrix provides three strategic propositions for underperforming products: increasi...

Despite the fact that property and violent crime rates have declined since 1973, in the years between 1988 and 1997, the US prison population increased drastically. While private prisons have some advantages over public prisons, they pose a number of social and logistical disadvantages as well. Opponents of prison privatization question the implications of the potential to profit from incarceration and the resulting disincentive to curb the influx of new inmates. There are many valid reasons to oppose the delegation of the prison function to private entities. However, it is difficult to find a strong constitutional argument upon which to challenge prison privatization. A thorough analysis of the courts' nondelegation doctrine jurisprudence shows the likely failure of this doctrine in a ...
