The Deseret News received a total of 30 awards at the 2008 Society of Professional Journalists Awards Banquet on Friday night. Journalists and staff brought the paper 10 first-place awards, 10 second-place awards and 10 third-place awards. The paper also received a total of six honorary mentions.
In the category for Best Paper, the Deseret News finished second. For Best News-Oriented Web site the Deseret News received a third- place award. The staff received a second-place award in Spot News for the story "Miners Trapped.

Derek Bauer, an attorney for the magazine at the district court and appellate court stages, called the appeals court's decision a "remarkable and unprecedented" decision that "took an opportunity to judicially interpose some morality into the First Amendment." The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and the Society for Professional Journalists filed a friend-of-the-court brief in the Husder case, which was accepted, diat argued the circuit court's opinion violated the First Amendment.
