MADISON, Wis. - Wisconsin police and firefighters were supposed to escape higher pension and health care costs imposed on other public workers through Gov. Scott Walker's contentious collective- bargaining law. But the state's largest police union said local governments statewide have found another way to make them pay up: threaten huge health insurance cost increases if they don't start contributing to their retirement funds. The Wisconsin Professional Police Association contends local governments are taking advantage of a budget clause that allows municipalities to dictate the form of public safety workers' health insurance plans. The WPPA said local leaders are using the new power to set up exorbitant deductibles for police and firefighters if they don't agree to contribute to pensions.
REDLANDS - This year was a busy one for the City of Redlands, which saw millions of dollars in budget reductions, two elections, a new mayor chosen and a new council seated. In January, the City Council unanimously voted to extend the labor contracts, set to expire in 2010, for the Redlands Police Officers Association (RPOA), the Redlands Professional Firefighters Association (RPFA) and the Redlands Association of Fire Management Employees (RAFME) through 2012.
There is some predictability in a list of organizations supporting or opposing a common-sense increase in the state's beer tax, currently the third-lowest in the nation. Among those supporting Assembly Bill 287 are the Wisconsin Council on Children & Families, the Wisconsin Medical Society, the Wisconsin Public Health Association and the Wisconsin Professional Police Association.
SAN BERNARDINO - One candidate for the vacant Ward 2 City Council seat has raised more money than his two opponents combined, according to the most recent campaign finance documents filed with the City Clerk's Office. Robert Jenkins, a 31-year-old Republican and special education teacher at Norte Vista High School in Riverside, has reported raising more than $11,600 in campaign money, including $5,000 donations apiece from the San Bernardino City Professional Firefighters Association and the San Bernardino Police Officers Association.

As soon as members of Redlands Sister Cities Association got word of the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that shook Japan on Friday, they took to their computers to try to reach their Japanese "families. Each year, the association facilitates student and professional exchanges between Redlands students, police officers and firefighters with those in Redlands' sister city of Hino, Japan. The city is one hour west of Tokyo and three hours south of the quake's epicenter of Sendai, which was very near the earthquake's epicenter and is Riverside's sister city. Association board member and past president Lowa Anderson said Redlands residents who go to Hino become part of their host families, so they were worried after learning of the quake.
