Dr. R. Scott Cairns, 70, operates a solo practice in Dubuque, with credentials at The Finley Hospital and Mercy Medical Center- Dubuque. His surgical privileges were restricted after two patients in 2008 suffered serious complications after surgery, according to a complaint released by the Iowa Board of Medicine on Wednesday. Hospital officials declined to comment on the matter.

Those who come in contact with students at the post-secondary level face a myriad of potential legal challenges in their interactions with students and others. All members of the academic community should be familiar with the more common legal issues and to plan accordingly to avoid future problems. This article explores FERPA in the classroom, reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities, concerns about the transferability of course work, the syllabus and related issues, copyright violations, document retention, and situations involving student and faculty misconduct. An annual professional development seminar addressing these legal concerns should be provided to those new to the academy and for higher education veterans.

Financial fraud should, in theory, never be a concern for a law firm, where ethical considerations must predominate.
After all, Rule of Professional Conduct 8.4 states clearly that "[i]t is professional misconduct for a lawyer to ... commit a criminal act that reflects adversely on the lawyer's honesty, trustworthiness or fitness as a lawyer ... [or to] engage in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation." That seems to cover the financial fraud waterfront pretty thoroughly. However, the fact that even people who know the "straight and narrow" can deviate from it is one of the biggest reasons why lawyers exist. Moreover, "fraud" comes in a variety of forms when it comes to law firm financial dealings.
