VA union moves to charter new Veterans Affairs local at Edward Hines Jr. VA Medical Center
HINES, Ill., Nov. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Federation of Government Employees is now the exclusive representative for more than 700 professional health care employees at the Edward Hines, Jr. Hospital in Hines, Ill. Physicians, pharmacists, medical technologists and other professionals at the facility will join more than 208,000 VA employees who currently are represented by AFGE and its National Veterans Affairs Council (NVAC).

More than a year ago, about 20 employees from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) began meeting in the basement of Holy Rosary Church in Washington, charting their plans to bring in the first union in the agency's 86-year history. On September 19, the plan came to fruition. Out of an eligible bargaining unit of 1,800, analysts voted 897-445 to join the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, giving employees the ability to negotiate with management over pay and other personnel policies. Their mission at GAO is transparency and accountability, says Chris Langford, a PDP employee who voted in favor of the union. WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE -- The U.S. Government Accountability Office on Wednesday spared the jobs of employees at its Wright-Patter-son Air Force Base field office and other locations across the country as the GAO settled on other methods of coping with expected congressional cuts to its budget.
The decision spares 37 jobs at the Wright-Patterson office whose employees are paid annual wages of about $45,000 to $135,000, said Keith Hudson, field representative there for Local 1921 of the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, the union of GAO employees.

The Executive Board of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers is meeting today on a proposed three-year contract with Pittsburgh Public Schools.
If the board recommends ratification of the deal, reached after a 20-hour negotiating session that ended Tuesday, the provisions will be mailed to teachers and other professional employees Friday. The federation will hold a meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday in Hall B of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center to discuss the terms.

The union seeks new contracts for 12,096 engineers and 5,672 technical workers throughout the Puget Sound region, Oregon, Utah and California. SPEEA's Puget Sound contracts expire Dec. 1. A third SPEEA bargaining unit in Wichita, Kan., opens talks Nov. 8 for a contract covering 785 engineers. The Wichita contract expires Dec. 5.
