Karen Magruder is vice-president and secretary of the Rancho Cucamonga Association of Professional Music Teachers. She invites those interested in music learning, especially as it relates to young children, to a New Member Brunch at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Magruder has pointed out in the past that children who have had music instruction tend to learn better in school than those who have not. A few weeks ago I saw a network TV report of still another study that indicated up to a 10-point gain in intelligence scores for kids who play music or sing. Science News magazine also cited a similar study and linked drama, chess and science lessons with lesser but still significant gains. The key seems to be getting the kids involved in creating something.
