The video game industry has been an interesting one to follow. It has been driven by a combination of creativity and individual entrepreneurship and has been international almost from its inception. Releases of individual titles now rival Hollywood box office introductions in popularity and attendant revenue. The growth of the industry, however, has tended to be disruptive with regard to dominant firms. The purpose of this paper is to capture the present state of competition in the industry and discuss the shifts that appear to be occurring in this period of counter-variant growth.
