  • The "credit union (CU) difference" has long been a nebulous concept to too many people, so financial cooperatives aiming to expand their ranks are employing concrete approaches to demonstrate the benefits of membership -- from their brick-and-mortar branches and convenient Internet outlets. CUs should set goals for branch employees in areas where they have some control, such as cross-selling production, services and account balances per household of members in the branch's service area, and growth in core deposits. Beyond branch-based outreach and technological support, CUs should examine their product lines for opportunities to recruit and retain members. The bottom line is that CUs seeking to expand their membership, even in the broader landscape of a community charter cannot and need...

  • Several factors affecting life insurance agent production were tested in an effort to produce a predictive model of agent and agency production. Surprisingly, formal education, professional education, and training showed no affect on production. The number of policyholders and smaller management span of control both proved predictive. The most important predictors, however, proved to be prior performance. The purpose of this study is to analyze factors commonly believed to affect life insurance agent production. This study will also test many of the factors commonly used within the insurance industry to select new agents. • Michael Moore's new film, "Capitalism: A Love Story" will be released next month. I've neither seen nor read reviews of the film, except for a short piece in the London Telegraph (9/6/09) titled "Michael Moore film calls capitalism evil." Aware of Michael Moore's previous films, I know that it will be, at best, a misleading story about capitalism. So let's do some defensive mental preparation, not about the film but what is and what is not capitalism. Capitalism is an economic system characterized by private ownership and control over the means of production. The distribution of goods and services and their prices are mainly determined by competition in a free market. Under such a system, the primary job of government is to protect private property, enforce contracts and ensure rule of ...
