A funny thing -- that's advanced product quality planning -- if there can be anything amusing about the always-serious subject of quality, is found in the description of the book on the subject that is found on the Auto Industry Action Groups Web site (aiag.org). APQP methodology is a result of work that was done during the 1980s by General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. It is an approach that facilitates registration to ISO/TS 16949. From a macro point of view, APQP and its associated processes help assure that what is being developed is worthwhile, and that what is being prepared or production will be producible not only from the standpoint of one's capabilities and resources, but in terms of consistent quality. One of the problems that can arise without APQP is that not all p...

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing the availability of a draft guidance for industry entitled ``Notification to FDA of Issues that May Result in a Prescription Drug or Biological Product Shortage.'' This draft guidance relates to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), which requires sole manufacturers to notify FDA of a discontinuance of certain drug products and to the President's Executive Order 13588 of October 31, 2011, directing FDA to use all available administrative tools to expand the Agency's efforts to combat the problem of drug shortages. We are also requesting responsive comments from interested stakeholders on a specific question posed in this Federal Register document related to the draft guidance.

Quality function deployment (QFD) is a methodology for capturing and translating the voice of the customer (VOC) into engineering characteristics of products or services. In addition, the process prioritizes and deploys these customer-driven characteristics throughout the product or service development to meet the VOC (that is, customer needs, wants, and expectations). QFD determines effective development targets for the prioritized product and service characteristics. The QFD process has been used and documented extensively in product development. The service industry, however, lacks in the application of this process. The purpose of this paper is to show practitioners and researchers how this process, in its entirety, can be used as a planning process to link customer requirements and...

When Mazda introduced the Mazda6 in 2003, it was the result of the brand's plan to build a global C/D segment sedan that could attract the attention of buyers in Europe, Asia and North America with little product differentiation. There were areas where the current Mazda6 did not meet the expectations of the US market -- quality, power and size, says Tim Barnes, director of product safety and planning for Mazda North America, who points out that most of the quality problems centered around attribute issues: ease of use of navigation systems, bluetooth integration, and HVAC controls. Not wanting to repeat the foibles of the past, Mazda engineers and designers worked to address the shortfalls of the current generation Mazda6 by developing a version that's tailored specifically to the North...

The purpose of the Process Map and Responsibility Matrix (PMRM) is to make sure that all the necessary steps and responsibilities for each task in product development and delivery are delineated. The high-tech industry utilizes PMRM to increase individual and collective participation and enhance managerial responsibility for product planning and quality control. This is in addition to its essential function of improving productivity and performance through detailed reconfiguring of the management process.

Hyundai is rapidly ascending the rankings of consumer quality lists -- lists that it once bumped along the bottoms of. The key success factors at Hyundai, says John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America VP of Product Development and Strategic Planning, are quality and reliability, excellent ergonomics and being obsessively focused on the customer. When describing vehicles that are competitive with those of Hyundai, there is a tendency for Toyota products to come up. Which leads to a question as to whether there are "Beat Toyota" signs affixed to the walls throughout the Hyundai product development organization. Krafcik denies that this is the case and simply states that it just so happens that Toyota has competitive products. Looking ahead a few years, as the head of advanced product developme...

There is no question about the great support Six Sigma enjoys in everyday practice. And a large contingent agrees variability is a fact of life in human and physical performance. Six Sigma has become a widely accepted, effective tactic when a measurable increase in the quality of an existing process is desired. Six Sigma is about improving a process already taking place and assuming what the process should be accomplishing in the first place. In some instances, useful change may be overlooked while single-mindedly pursuing improvement of the quality -- reduced variability -- of current operations. Strategic thinking and planning encourage a proactive approach to product improvement, which leads to organizational improvement and contribution to external clients and the shared society. Wh...
