In between sips of cappuccino at a local coffee shop, Saunders admits that in many semesters he must spend "way more than 50%" of his time on his students; during those months, every other responsibility, including his research on the cell biology of Alzheimer's disease, just "floats." Saunders obtained the first National Institutes of Health grant he applied for at Drexel, an R21 grant for a pilot project that brought in approximately $400,000, and resulted in three publications, including a 2007 paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS, 104(16):6696-701, 2007).

WASHINGTON (MCT) -- People with Asperger syndrome, a mild form of autism, dramatically improve their social learning skills and spend more time gazing at pictures of faces after inhaling a whiff of the social-bonding hormone oxytocin, researchers have found.
The study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science, is the first to demonstrate the effects of oxytocin -- a hormone that promotes mother-infant bonding, socialization, trust and cooperation -- in people diagnosed with Asperger's.
