HAMILTON -- A penitent Tippi Slaughter stood before Judge Craig Hedric on Wednesday and learned she won't do prison time for pilfering $1,700 from the Butler County Democratic Party.
The former Butler County Board of Elections chief pleaded guilty to theft in office in August, and Hedric sentenced her to up to five years probation, 60 hours of community service over six months, a $25 per month supervision fee, court costs and she must obtain a job and undergo a substance abuse assessment. She has already repaid the $1,700.

LOS ANGELES - Former Pico Rivera Mayor Ron Beilke, who was convicted in January of two misdemeanor counts of conflict of interest, was sentenced Wednesday to three years probation, 30 days community service and banned from running for public office for four years.
Beilke was also fined $1,000, plus other fees at his sentencing at Los Angeles Superior Court.

The longtime Alden town clerk, who admitted stealing $12,403 from the town, was sentenced Wednesday to five years' probation and 300 hours of community service.
Dorothy L. Bycina, 73, who has resigned and repaid the full amount, told Erie County Judge Sheila A. DiTullio she accepted responsibility for her crime.

LONG BEACH - An outspoken newspaper publisher was sentenced to three years' summary probation and ordered to complete 300 hours of community service Wednesday for his allegedly belligerent behavior at the scene of a deadly fire one year ago.
John "Jay" Beeler, who publishes the biweekly Beachcomber in East Long Beach, was characteristically defiant and unremorseful as the sentence was imposed by Long Beach Superior Court Judge Jesse Rodriguez.

Waukesha - Calling former North Lake Fire Chief Terrence Stapleton's conduct against a black man last year "blatantly racist," Waukesha County Circuit Judge Lee S. Dreyfus Jr. on Tuesday ordered Stapleton to perform at least 50 hours of community service to an organization that primarily serves African-Americans.
In sparing Stapleton jail time, Dreyfus placed him on 12 months of probation, directed him to undergo racial sensitivity training and ordered a total of 100 hours of community service, including the 50-hour requirement.

LITTLE VALLEY -- A Chautauqua County man who pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in Machias was sentenced to probation Tuesday in Cattaraugus County Court.
Robert R. Howe Jr., 40, of Forestville, was sentenced by Judge Larry M. Himelein to five years of probation, assigned 100 hours of community service and fined $2,000. The crime occurred June 15, 2008.
