Begun in 1984 as a joint project of the Bar Association of Erie County (BAEC) and Neighborhood Legal Services, the Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) celebrated its 14th annual volunteer recognition and reception on Nov. 30.
VLP recruits and trains lawyers to provide pro bono legal services to low income individuals and small non-profits in Erie County. The volunteer lawyers in the program provide advice and representation to those seeking services relating to consumer and bankruptcy cases, housing issues, and family law.

"We realized we'd have to get to know some other lawyers," Hens-Greco recalls. "We signed up for pro bono work Neighborhood Legal Services, the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force. We figured that'd be a way to meet the best lawyers, and it was." Among her accomplishments was helping to win the right to second-parent adoptions (especially needed in gay and lesbian families), in which the non-biological parent can adopt a child. This allows the second parent to assume custody should the biological parent die. It also entitles the child to inheritance and death benefits from the second parent.

JACKSON - La'Verne Edney is going from A to Z in the state bar roll looking for attorneys willing to represent poor people in need of civil legal services.
Since she joined the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project as general counsel on Sept. 1, Edney has signed up 60 additional lawyers who have agreed to take a case for free. She's gotten through the B's in her alphabetical recruitment. There are more than 6,700 practicing lawyers in Mississippi.
