  • Today, a family with two children who both attend private four-year institutions would be facing total education costs of more than $750,000, assuming annual tuition inflation continues at its current pace. That's a frightening number for most families. While it is important to engage in a disciplined savings program to accumulate funds to pay for college, it is equally important to become educated about the financial aid process. There are many misconceptions about the process of applying for and receiving financial aid, and there are key strategies you can employ to help you qualify for the best aid package. Areas a financial advisor should be knowledgeable about include: 1. loans vs. grants and scholarships, 2. private vs. public schools, and 3. negotiating for aid. To capitalize on ...

  • This study looks at factors affecting the decision of early retirement for Egyptian government sector employees. The empirical analysis is based on 2005 nationally representative sample of government sector workers. Among the findings of this study are: women are more likely to retire earlier than men; good health status is associated with longer stay on the job; the level of education is not a determining factor for women, but it is for men; men plan to work after their early retirement; the presence of the working wife has a positive effect on her husband to retire early, yet a working husband discourages his wife from retiring early. Policy implications discussed timing of the announcement of the plans; the potential outcome of excessive payouts, as well as the need for the governmen...

  • This study aims at determining the impact of maternal, physician, and hospital characteristics on cesarean section rates in Beirut. Data was collected through a cross sectional survey from a proportionate random sample of 600 women delivering in 10 hospitals in Beirut. Biavariate analysis (Chi square tests and tests of means) and logistic regression analysis were done. A 35% incidence rate of cesarean section was detected among all deliveries. Cesarean delivery was significantly associated with multiple gestation, gestational age, number of previous deliveries, site of prenatal care (private clinic vs. health center), time of delivery (morning vs. evening), day of delivery (weekend vs. weekdays), and history of previous cesarean delivery. The high cesarean rate in Beirut raises serious ...

  • Performance measures have long been a topic of interest in higher education although no consensus on the best way to measure performance has been achieved. This paper examines the extent and effectiveness of service efforts and accomplishment reporting by public and not-for-profit U.S. colleges and universities using survey data provided by the National Association of College and University Business Officers. Effectiveness is evaluated using the Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) suggested criteria. Regression analysis suggests an association between the extent of disclosure and size, leverage, level of education provided, and regional accreditation agency. Private institutions rate themselves as more effective communicators. Effectiveness of communication is also associated w...

  • Pignanelli: In modern society, we are confronted with various conflicts of ideology: capitalism vs. socialism, Sunni vs. Shia, Israelis vs. Palestinians, Coke vs. Pepsi. In the Beehive State, such combatants include banks vs. credit unions, conservatives vs. "true" conservatives, Rocky Anderson vs. Jim Matheson, Utes vs. Cougars, Diet Coke vs. Sprite. The argument over proposed subsidies to parents with children in private schools has now vaulted to this honored tier. I do harbor concerns with a comprehensive voucher/tax credit proposal. Just removing funding from the public system will not effectuate needed changes and will only harm innocent students. Further, Utah has limited private schools and few new institutions are expected in the near future, thereby fostering smaller centers w...

  • Law practice and legal education are facing fundamental changes. Many assume that these changes will force law schools to give up on theory and focus more on training students for the practice of law. However, this Essay shows that the future may be more uncertain and complex. The only thing that is certain is that law schools may face, for the first time, the need to provide the type of education the market demands rather than serving lawyers’ and law professors’ preferences. Legal educators must respond to these demands by serving not just the existing U.S. market for legal services but also a global market for legal information. This may call for training in some, but not all, of the theories and disciplines that have been developing in law schools.
