JACKSON - The Mississippi Senate voted in favor of a bill that would force the state's attorney general to go through a public review process before entering contracts with private attorneys. The bill, which passed 29-18, was supported by critics of Democrat Atty. Gen. Jim Hood, who say he has given lucrative state contracts to private attorneys, some of whom have donated to his political campaigns.
The state Attorney General's Office has filed a consumer protection lawsuit against a private contractor from Ross who is accused of failing to start work after accepting payment from home improvement contracts. William M. Lacek is accused of leaving projects incomplete, performing work in an unprofessional or shoddy manner, not notifying consumers of their right to cancel contracts and operating an unregistered home improvement business, Attorney General Tom Corbett said Thursday.
While there's plenty to criticize in the nearly eight years since President Bush took office, we don't think the travel pattern of Attorney General Michael Mukasey is one of them. Scholars loosely associated with the law and economics movement have helpfully described class action lawsuits as presenting a classic agency problem: class action attorneys (agents) pursue the interests of their class member client...
I have developed certain maxims for Black logic. One of them is that Blacks are always knocking on the wrong door, talking to the wrong person and raising the wrong question. In [Sean Bell] et al., the call is for the resignation of Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. To be sure, Kelly is "a" question but he is not "the" question. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad described Blacks as "deaf, dumb and blind." Kwame Ture urged Blacks to get a political education. Voter education sustains plantation politics. Dr. Amos Wilson sacrificed his life to write "Blueprint for Black Power." Black selected officials, leading Blacks and civil rights pacifists have stepped in to fill the void. Our survival will start with critical thinking. I had to, perforce, give up a private practice to become a pro bono...
