Several changes were made in the 30-year-old jail in response to a state fire marshal's inspection July 1. The county put loose wires in a conduit and replaced an expired fire extinguisher system. It also put covers on light fixtures, labeled a breaker box and worked on an outside trailer where a trusty sleeps.

Reviewing the facts in The State of New York ex. rel. Stephen J. Harkavy on behalf of John Does 1 through 12 v. Eileen Consilvio, New York State Supreme Court, New York County Judge Jacqueline W. Silbermann determined that the 12 prisoners' due process rights were violated. The court directed the petitioners to be examined by two physicians to determine if they should be released.
