LEWISTON - A man county jail officials in Portland released prematurely Wednesday night turned himself in Thursday afternoon to jail officials in Auburn where he was wanted on a robbery charge. Andrew Bruce Williams, 40, of Bangor was released by Cumberland County Sheriff's Office on personal recognizance at 7 p.m. on charges of refusal to submit to arrest or detention and obstruction of government administration. A supervisor at the jail processed the bail paperwork and let Williams leave the jail, a press release said.
Police didn't violate the Fourth Amendment when they entered a motel room without a warrant to search for an escaped prison inmate, the 5th Circuit has ruled in affirming the denial of a motion to suppress. Prison officials mistakenly released the defendant before he had completed a 10-year sentence on a federal felony conviction. In searching for the defendant, federal agents learned that he was registered under his own name at a motel. The agents entered the defendant's motel room without a warrant, where they discovered a gun.

NORFOLK | Police are continuing to search for a prisoner who authorities said escaped from a deputy Wednesday after he caused the car he was being transported in to crash . Timothy F. Kearney, 27, of Norfolk had been on his way to jail when, the sheriff's department said, he reached over with his foot, stomped on the gas pedal and caused a crash, then ran off still handcuffed. The crash occurred by the downtown Radisson.
