  • While several studies have examined the relationship between hegemonic masculinity and criminality, prior research has not explored correctional interventions that respond to the pernicious effects of hypermasculinity in prison. This article reports the findings of an exploratory, qualitative study of two related men's programs at prisons in Massachusetts and California. The study included participant observation and interviews with program volunteers. The article describes how the programs seek to deconstruct hypermasculinity in the prison setting and help inmates redefine masculinity to produce prosocial outcomes. The programs are offshoots of a large, voluntary organization called the ManKind Project. Drawing on the philosophy of the "mythopoetic men's movement" as well as popular pe...

  • A special feature of the conference was that it brought together a range of stakeholders', all of whom have their particular role to play in optimizing the effectiveness of European cooperation in prison education and training as a means of promoting the successful reintegration of offenders. • The National Institutes of Health (NIH) deems prisoners to be a vulnerable population because prisoners "may be under constraints because of their incarceration which could affect their ability to make a truly voluntary and uncoerced decision whether or not to participate as subjects in research." (NIH, 1978, §46.302). Stringent federal regulations have been instituted to protect prisoners from coercion or abuse. This article was borne from my experiences in implementing a mental health research project in a state prison system. The extent of the regulations at the project outset was underestimated, thus causing logistical challenges and delays. Familiarity with these regulations will facilitate the completion of prison-based research projects for other nurse researchers.

  • Students often compare their schools unfavorably to prisons, most often in a tone of rueful irony. By contrast, judicial opinions about freedom of speech within government-run institutions compare schools and prisons without irony or even hesitation. This Article considers whether the analogy between school and prison in free speech cases is evidence that the two institutions share a joint mission. At a macro level, there is an undeniable structural similarity between the constitutional speech rules for schools and prisons. At a micro level, however, there are subtle but significant differences between the two. These arise primarily from the judiciary's belief that differences exist between the purposes of schools and prisons - although, somewhat ominously, the differences appear even m...

  • OSLO, Norway - The self-described perpetrator of Norway's deadly bombing and shooting rampage was ordered held in isolation at a hearing Monday after calmly telling the court that two other groups of allies stand ready to join his murderous campaign. Anders Behring Breivik has admitted bombing Norway's capital and opening fire on a political youth group retreat on an island near the capital. He told authorities that he expects to spend the rest of his life in prison. Saying he wanted to save Europe from Muslim immigration, he entered a plea of not guilty that will guarantee him future court hearings and opportunities to address the public, even indirectly.
