Printmakers from across Ohio are converging in Dayton this weekend for a statewide Prinmakers Gathering. The gathering begins this evening with events that are also part of downtown Dayton's monthly First Friday festivities. On tap tonight is another installment of Steamroller Prints, Flat-Out Fun in which gigantic hand-pulled prints will be created at the corner of East Fifth Street and Patterson Boulevard using a real steamroller as the press. Dayton-based artists Nicholas Voegele and Patrick Mauk will facilitate the inking and printing process. In addition, 45 local artists will have their carved linoleum blocks printed by the steamroller.

The mono-types done by the late Kay Smith of Oakwood were based on her love of the outdoors, especially birds and flowers. She painted with oil on glass; then transferred the image to rag paper. Usually, it's possible to pull only one or two good prints with this technique before destroying the image on the glass," said her husband, artist David L. Smith. "Due to the change in color and texture, the second print will have little resemblance to the first. Kay always enjoyed the color and line achieved in this manner.
On the surface, the pairing of artworks by South African William Kentridge and Russian Oleg Kudryashov at the Kreeger Museum seems like a good match. Both artists go "against the grain," as the exhibit is titled, by bearing witness to the history of oppression within their native lands through sketchy scenes. Most of the approximately four dozen works on view are 1990s prints owned by Washington-area collectors.
The Dayton Printmakers Cooperative is holding a print sale at its facilities today and tomorrow. All proceeds will be split between the co-op and its members. There will be hundreds of matted and framed prints for sale, both at our North Keowee facility and at the storefront adjacent to DVAC (Dayton Visual Arts Center) on North Jefferson," said print co- op member Patrick Mauk.
Rembrandt: The Consummate Etcher and Other 17th-Century Printmakers" will be on view at the Housatonic Museum of Art from Sept. 6 through Oct. 28. The exhibition has been organized by Syracuse University, culled from works from the university's art collection. A free opening reception will be held 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 6.
Secrets of wood-block printing have passed slowly among artisans over thousands of years. It started with the ancient Chinese and Egyptians and Indians, gradually spreading to Japan and medieval Europe. With the Internet now involved, though, the intricacies of these once-obscure techniques suddenly are available anywhere the world's computers are connected. That's part of the reason Clark County will become a mecca this month for printmakers from throughout the world. Sharri LaPierre is the other reason. The local artist enthusiastically suggested her Pleasant Valley studio, on 5 acres near the Clark County Event Center at the Fairgrounds, as a place for interested parties to gather and share ideas about the form. She also offered the North Bank Gallery, in downtown Vancouver, as a sp...
Visitors to Seaside Art Gallery will have the opportunity to meet two printmakers who will be demonstrating their craft in early July. Florida residents Carolyn Cohen and David Hunter exhibit their etchings at Seaside Art Gallery year-round, and they visit the area each summer to share their process. Cohen, a watercolorist and printmaker, expresses a love for nature. A member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators , she has spent significant time painting in botanical gardens. She will demonstrate how to apply watercolor to an etching. The image she's chosen, "Front Row Seats" , features Adirondack chairs on the beach. Cohen's portfolio includes images of animals in the wild, botanicals, a wetland series, landscapes and still life.
