In the mostly female dominated profession of teaching, this pilot project investigates how a group of males who are both fathers and teachers perceive their experiences as they navigate these dual roles. This qualitative study invited men who were teaching in early childhood, primary and secondary settings in New Zealand, and who were also fathers, to comment on their perceptions of how their dual roles impacted on each other. The themes emerging from their responses included empathy for parents, better understanding of children, benefits for own children, and being viewed as "more real" by their students, as well as being better equipped to understand schools and learning, improved personal and professional qualities, and more time available to spend with family.

This paper reports the results of a survey of faculty members who taught intermediate accounting in Fall, 2005, using the Kieso, Weygandt & Warfield (2004 and 2005) textbook. The purpose of the study was to determine the extent to which the instructors used each type of end-of-chapter (EOC) material that the book contained. The study found that, while students' critical-thinking and communication skills were addressed to some extent, the participants used the EOC material primarily to develop students' technical accounting knowledge. The study also found that the participants seem to have adopted the frequently-voiced suggestion that preparing students to pass the CPA exam should not be a primary focus of accounting education.

This study investigated the empirical relationships among managerial linear and nonlinear thinking styles and the four branches of Mayer and Salovey's (1997) emotional intelligence model. Also tested was the moderating effect of emotional labor on the relationship between balanced linear/nonlinear thinking style and affective organizational commitment. Data from 93 managers demonstrated that: (1) linear thinking is associated with regulating emotions; (2) nonlinear thinking is related to utilizing emotions to facilitate thinking; and (3) balanced linear/nonlinear thinking is associated with overall emotional intelligence. Furthermore, emotional labor interacted with balanced linear/nonlinear thinking to explain unique variance in affective organizational commitment. Implications for the...
