• Orie Sisters to Face Pretrial Conference

State Sen. Jane Clair Orie, charged in a corruption probe along with her sister Janine Orie, faces a pretrial conference in her case Sept. 17. The Orie sisters were scheduled for a formal arraignment, which involves paperwork at the Allegheny County Courthouse, but an attorney for the women handled it Thursday without them having to show up.

FARMINGTON -- Jeremy Hauck appeared in court Thursday just long enough for his attorney to ask the judge to postpone Hauck's pretrial conference. Defense attorney Todd Utzinger said he is still awaiting results of Hauck's mental health evaluation and needs more time to investigate a constitutional issue.

• New Court Date Set in Bludgeoning Death

BRANFORD -- Michael Chaves, the Arizona man charged in the April 17, 2009, bludgeoning death of Dale Lynn Anderson at the TA Travel Center in Branford, has a new date in Superior Court of Sept. 29, the prosecutor said after a pretrial conference Wednesday. A plea of not guilty was entered for Chaves, 39, of Phoenix, after he waived a probable cause hearing July 13, said Senior Assistant State's Attorney Eugene R. Calistro Jr. The pretrial conference took place in the chambers of Superior Court Judge Roland Fasano.
