The tradition of music in the United States Marine Corps stretches back to the second president of the United States, John Adams, who signed a bill creating the nation's first official Marine Band. Live, free music during the summer at Furman Park in Downey - the Twilight Summer Concert Series - is considerably younger.
The history of Monarch Lodge #45 is one of the most notable in the annals of the IBPOE of W. Most people called this lodge, The Mighty Monarchs. In the early Thirties when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was inaugurated President of the United States, the Mighty Monarch's Band was invited to play at the affair. Industry Lodge #45 was one of the biggest lodges in the City, but it did not receive the acclaim of Monarch #45. One of the founders of Industry was Tyson, the father of Cecily Tyson. In her early years, she was one of the strong supporters of the programs of Industry Lodge. The old journals, printed by Industry Lodge will show the picture of this aspiring actress. She bought space in the journal, and could be found at many of the Elk affairs.

The President's Own" United States Marine Band will offer a free concert of traditional concert band music and contemporary wind ensemble music at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Municipal Auditorium.
