LIVERMORE FALLS -- Selectmen and Budget Committee members began budget review on Monday with several department heads explaining proposed budgets for 2011-12. The proposed preliminary budget draft is nearly $2.19 million. It represents a $5,144 or 0.2 percent increase from the current budget. The amount does not include any money for capital improvements, which is still under discussion.
An early draft of Ligonier Valley School District's preliminary 2012-13 budget shows a $1 million deficit at the district's tax rate of 73 mills. In a presentation to school directors at Monday's night work session before the regular meeting, district business manager Jim Marnell said the district has four options to balance the $26.6 million budget:
Next year, Kanawha County school employees shouldn't count on an incentive worth up to $1,050 for regularly showing up to work. On Monday, Superintendent Ron Duerring said school officials plan to draft a preliminary 2009-10 budget that does not devote any money to the incentive policy. The bonus, given each July, has been met with mixed reviews since board members approved it in June 2007.

HOULTON - Despite the tough economy and an anticipated loss in state revenue, town officials are cautiously optimistic that they can keep the tax rate stable next year. During a Town Council meeting Monday evening, Town Manager Doug Hazlett presented a preliminary draft of the 2010 municipal budget. He said town officials are aiming to maintain services, invest in area roads and cope with an expected loss in state revenue without increasing taxes.
LA MIRADA - When City Manager Tom Robinson saw a preliminary draft of the budget several months ago, he had reason to be happy. Despite tough economic times, it appeared the budget was going to have a more than $1 million surplus, but those good feelings have disappeared in the last couple of months.
SAN BERNARDINO - City officials are considering a proposal to create a city-run tow yard for impounded vehicles, but local towing companies say the plan would kill their businesses. A police lieutenant said Wednesday that the plan is still in its rough-draft form, but San Bernardino's preliminary budget assumes that the city will begin storing impounded vehicles at the start of 2010.
Milwaukee Area Technical College board members gave preliminary approval to a draft budget on Tuesday that would increase its tax levy 5% in the next fiscal year. The college's $314 million budget would be a 7% increase over last year's spending plan, and the tax levy itself would increase from $133 million to $139 million next year.
JAY - School and budget committee members will get an overview of a proposed $10.3 million school budget for fiscal 2009 on Monday. Selectmen and Budget Committee members will begin review of a preliminary draft of the proposed municipal spending package of $6.1 million on March 17.
The Bethel Park school board gave the go-ahead Tuesday night to a $73.8 million preliminary budget for the 2011-2012 school year, setting the stage for adjustments to be made before its final approval in spring, officials said. The preliminary budget was passed to fulfill state requirements that districts either submit an early draft of their finances or agree to a cap on any property tax increases. For Bethel Park, the maximum increase under the cap would have been .42 mills, but the proposed budget would include a .98-mill increase.
