  • WEST GARDINER -- The Center for Maine Craft, off I-95, is hosting a precious metal clay studio day with South Portland artist Lynda McCann-Olson, from 12 noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 18. The studio Day will bring McCann-Olson's jewelry studio to the center and offer the opportunity to observe precious metal clay techniques and to see objects in various stages of completion. Precious metal clay, PMC, is a material developed and patented in the 1990s by Mitsubishi Materials of Japan. Microscopic particles of silver are mixed with a moist binder to create a material that has the feel and working properties of modeling clay. Using simple tools, objects are easily given shape, texture, and character. After air-drying, the objects are heated to temperatures approaching the melting point of ...

  • Many aspects of Louise Little's 2009 art submission to the International Society of Glass Beadmakers worked in her favor. Her work was selected as cover art for the Winter 2010 issue of The Glass Bead. The winning entry was inspired by petroglyphs she saw near a cave while vacationing in Palm Springs, Calif., last year. This year we received several entries for the Gathering 2010 theme, 'Beyond Boundaries: Origins and Influence of the Glass Bead.' "She took the glass beadmaking tradition and added precious metal clay to achieve a mixed media glass be...

  • [Kay Seurat]'s traditionally fabricated jewelry is well-known around town, but she's a pioneer of other design methods, too. She uses a relatively new material called Precious Metal Clay, or PMC. The PMC that Seurat uses is silver metal clay that is pliable until she fires it in a kiln. "One of the big challenges with fabrication is textures," says Seurat. "That's why PMC is nice. Using PMC, Seurat creates uniquely textured silver jewelry with intricate designs. Some of her PMC pieces are formed to make shapes, like fish or leaves. But Seurat currently specializes in Asianinspired jewelry: pendants, bracelets, charms and earrings featuring Chinese calligraphy. "I'm drawn to the Taoist religion in China," says Seurat. "I think some of the ideas in Taoism got into the way the pictograms ...

This spring's offerings include workshops in lamp working, bead making, sculpture and a class on precious metal clay. "We have visiting artists from all over the country," said Loughlin.
