Election night advice
WHILE WE HAD our differences on several issues, I admired Owen Pickett greatly. I recall his election eve remarks to campaign workers (I served as a precinct captain) one year.

CHICAGO - It used to be that getting elected in Chicago meant relying on the ward boss, the precinct captain and the small armies they deployed to fix potholes, hand out frozen turkeys and even drive people to the polls.
Court rulings and corruption convictions have ended the primacy of the Machine, leaving get-out-the-vote efforts in the hands of what officials say are volunteers.

Arab Americans were engaged in the Democratic process and were being coordinated by activists from Iowa's Arab American and Muslim communities. Numan Abu Essa of Iowa City led the [Barack Obama] campaign as the precinct captain for Iowa City Precinct #22, which Obama won by a large margin. Numan is a proud Arab American and his many efforts to expand the reach of Obama's campaign included organizing in the historic mosque in Cedar Rapids, as well as conducting outreach to the supporters of the campaigns of Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich and Governor [Bill Richardson] and the progressive peace organizations in the region. Abu Essa went into the caucus night confident and was anxious afterwards. "We think this will give him a great boost going into New Hampshire and beyond," he said of ...

This was zero to 100 for me, and Fm in it for the long haul," Dripping Springs resident and national delegate James Akers said one morning as he recharged over a cup of coffee at the Texas delegation breakfast. "I mean, Tm hosting house parties for local Democrats," Akers said, sounding almost incredulous at his own activism. "Before, they were lucky if I'd let someone throw up a yard sign. But I'm realizing these locals, like Bill Hutchison and Woodie Jones, can win. Do you know who Woodie Jones is?" Time and again, delegates in Denver pounced on opportunities to educate anyone they could on local, down-ballot races, a fierce urgency apparent in their voices. "I'm inspired by Obama," Akers said, "but I'm also motivated by my fears. He brought about more of an awareness of those fears....

I grew up in a Republican household. While my father was preoccupied with work, my homemaker mother was the political fireball. She went to school board meetings, attended rallies and protests and was a precinct captain as well as the president of her county Republican women's club. Now in her 80s, she is still active in the Republican Party, manning the phones and attending meetings.
People like my mother have been fighting for this country in the political trenches their entire lives. To all the people who are finally mad, who are yelling about Christine O'Donnell and waving Gadsden flags, I say, "Welcome, it's about time.

DEFENDER: Really, that's interesting. Now wasn't your dad also a precinct captain?
JONES: I just stayed involved and I became an assistant to an alderman we elected (Wilson Frost). I remember I took a trip down to Springfield, they used to have what they called Democrat Day. So I went down there and stopped by the Capitol. It was me first time I had seen the Capitol and I thought to myself, 'Heck I wouldn't mind having one of those seats - to be a state representative.' And so the opportunity came in 1972 and I ran and got elected. I've been down there every since.
JONES: That's a very very difficult question. I respected Wilson Frost simply because I got to know him from working so closely with him. I knew Harold Washington, I served with in legislature in Springfield. As you know he b...

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Diana Webb said she had 14 people pledged to show up at Lincoln High School to support Gov. Bill Richardson.
A precinct captain for the governor, Webb knew by heart the talking points of Richardson's campaign. "He's got more experience than anyone else," she told a reporter. "And the way the administration has messed things up, we're going to need a diplomat to fix it.

Born [Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama], Michelle Obama is a success story in herself; not just as the wife of President Barack Obama, but as a woman on a mission. Michelle Robinson grew up on the South Side of Chicago in a one bedroom apartment, the daughter of a man who worked as a city pump operator and who was Democratic precinct captain. Her mother became a stay-athome mom to raise Michelle and her older brother, Craig, but before that, she was a secretary at Spiegel's.
Back on her education track, Michelle joined University of Chicago as associate dean of student services. There, Michelle developed Chicago University's first community service program. Michelle was selected to become the University of Chicago Medical Center's vice president of community relations and external affai...
