Sunday: Residents are encouraged to read the first two paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights (see www.archives.gov/national-archives- experience/charters/charters.html). They're encouraged to think about, write down or converse with family, friends and neighbors the key ideas in those passages. Monday: Residents are encouraged to walk around their neighborhood and stop to talk with five people they don't know very well or at all, then share with them their thoughts on democracy and citizen involvement. The organizers hope cafes will hold "open mic" events about democracy and hope that radio stations will allow people to call in an talk about democracy.

• The Constitution Belongs to All of Us

Two days after standing in the U.S. House of Representatives and reciting the First Amendments guarantee of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, Gabrielle Giffords was gunned down outside a Tucson grocery store. The Congressional Democrat had been assembling with her constituents. At least six people died, and 12 (including Giffords) were wounded. As details of this tragedy unfold in days to come, Americans should agree that the U.S. Constitution must be nurtured by the way we live, work and play each day. Some days pass routinely. Other days present joys worthy of mountain-top arias. Then there are days such as Saturday, when families are torn apart, and not even the Constitution can protect some peoples rights.
