I Thank Him, the independent debut by local act Jacobs' Ladder, rises above an amateur recording but falls short of a professional effort. The album's thin coldness speaks of limited resources and facilities, but tight harmonies and engaging grooves still reveal a talented group. Diana Jacobs, lead singer on most of the songs, has a Whitney Houston soulfulness, especially on smoother songs such as "Through His Eyes" and "Elohim." The five-member chorus joining Jacobs achieves an early-1960s soul feel, especially on "Jesus Will Never Say No," which could hold its own against such standards as "Goin' to the Chapel" and "On-Time God." With minimal keyboard backing, "The Prayer of St. Francis" has a moving reverence that would fit in any Christian denomination's service. It's just a shame t...

The Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi says it is in giving that we receive. Witness the Christian rock band Jars of Clay, which will be performing with Third Day on Dec. 7 at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

As a reviewer from Christian Music Today described the album, "It's transparency by design, an expressed desire to speak truth, as they see it, at the very moment they experience it.

The cubicle in Jessica Gotthold's West Paterson office is decorated with a curious mixture of mementos from law enforcement, firefighting ... and felines.
It has fire department arm patches, a photo of a Port Authority police officer - a friend who perished on 9/11 - cat calendars, kitty cartoons and a prayer to St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
