What exactly is a prairie, and where does one find a relic prairie in Missouri? The word "prairie" preceded the 1804 arrival of Lewis and Clark. Geographer Walter Schroeder said the French had earlier named Missouri's grasslands "prairie," their word for meadow. Prairies represented open fields of wildflowers and occasional thickets of shrubs and brush. Forests provided borders on the horizon. Fires were common, natural or set by American Indians, thus maintaining the openness of the grasslands.
Large game animals once populated Missouri's pre-settlement prairies. Along with turkey, prairie chickens, golden plover, white pelicans, sandhill cranes and grouse were killed regularly for sport and food. As prairies were converted for agriculture and other uses, the once-plentiful prairie chi...

Heather Corral scored 12 points, Kelsey Asplund had 11, and Megan Lindlsey finished with 10 as the Prairie girls basketball opened the West Coast Jamboree in Antioch, Calif., with a 54-35 win Tuesday over Oak Ridge of El Dorado Hills, Calif.
We shell-shocked them early, Prairie coach Al Aldridge said, referring to his teams defensive intensity.

One of the more striking modern-day conveniences we take for granted is the ease of long distance travel. Before commercial airlines, concrete highways and railroads, there were stagecoach lines.
And what now takes hours would take days as stages, pulled by teams of four and sometimes six horses, bumped to and fro down impossibly rutted "roads," waded through chest-high mud, crossed low- lying prairies transformed into shallow lakes, and crossed rolling, swollen streams.

Missouri is characterized by diverse landscape features that include glaciated plains, Ozark mountains and flood plains along two of the nation's major rivers. Each distinct geographic region is an ecological treasure, complex and rich in native plants and wildlife for Missourians to learn from and enjoy. With this in mind, the Missouri Department of Conservation has been actively involved in the stewardship of our state's public lands and wildlife for the past 75 years.
In the May issue of Missouri Conservationist magazine, Conservation Department Director Bob Ziehmer described the department's twofold mission: to protect and manage the forest, fish and wildlife resources of the state and to facilitate and provide opportunity for all residents to use, enjoy and learn about these resour...

STEVEN LANE/The Columbian Prairie basketball player Sarah Rebello, 16, has been working as a model since she was 12.
Sarah Rebello has done photo shoots for magazines Glitter, Instyle and Seventeen. But she really enjoys walking the runway at fashion shows. You just chill out with other models until its time to start. Its more laid back than a photo shoot, she said.

TACOMA Forget, for a moment, what will be missing from todays state championship game. Because the reality of what will be there is too tantalizing to be overshadowed.
When Prairie (27-0) meets Holy Names of Seattle (28-0), when the Class 3A girls title is decided in the Tacoma Dome, when the clichs such as Its a shame somebody has to lose are broken out ... one team is going to suffer its first defeat of the season.
