  • Today, I commit my first official "act of Christmas" for the year. Today I return to the manger.

  • Despite their control of all three branches of government, this has not been a good summer for liberal Democrats. Their health care "reform" bill, which has yet to be fully written, much less fully funded, has been exposed at town hall meetings as a power grab over life and death with the strong possibility that "do no harm" will be replaced by a utilitarian approach to treatment. The cap-and-trade measure (dubbed "cap and tax" by the Wall Street Journal) appears in trouble. Closer scrutiny has revealed it as one more reach into our pockets by politicians who never have enough of our money.

  • Jack Kevorkian, given a life sentence for his practice of assisted suicide, has been fascinated with death throughout his life. His interest in euthanasia has been fueled by a desire to gain power over life and death. Kevorkian also seems to have been motivated by the metaphysical question of what differentiates life from death. His social isolation may have also been a factor.

  • In this jagged critique on the inevitable alienation of mediated relationships, Strange Man (Anthony Hughes) apparently doesn't just hold the power of life and death over a group of life-sized "bio-anamorphic mechanicals" - human-like androids who populate his tech-bench domicile. They fear him because he also has the predilection to "debug" them on the fly; painfully tweaking, changing, adding or removing functions on a whim. An Ozzie and Harriet pair named He and She repeatedly trade lines of programming code - domestic dialogue to you and me - as they attempt to arrive at increasingly convincing simulations of human emotion. After one says "I love you" and the other rejoins "I love you too," the first one says excitedly, "I think you meant it that time! Throughout all there is an ...

  • I am troubled by the rhetoric recently on the New Era's editorial page. Cal Thomas' Sept. 5 column is a case in point. He says: The health care reform bill has been exposed at town hall meetings as a power grab over life and death....

  • Editor, the Tribune: Question for supporters of Amendment 2: Have you considered what happens to democracy when a particular endeavor (in this case, stem cell research) is completely exempt from all state and local regulation while at the same time being entitled to taxpayer support (See part 7 of Amendment 2)? Isn't it likely that this will eventually morph into an all-powerful state with unprecedented power over life and death, taxes and everything in between? Think about it. Doesn't everybody want to be exempt from the law? How long will it take before other powerful forces insist that they, too, are involved in stem cell research, so that they can claim constitutional exemption from the law while being entitled to unlimited tax dollars? Mary Andersen

  • Was it because Chorizo finished third? Chorizo is finished for the season as a racing sausage at Milwaukee Brewers games. Who knew? Major League Baseball apparently has the power of life and death over changes in team mascots and logos. Mr. Selig: Chorizo isn't the mascot. If it were, the team would be called the Milwaukee Chorizones or maybe the Cerveceros every day of the season. By the way, is it OK if I continue wearing shorts and those cute white ankle socks when I attend a game? Want the request in triplicate? Ricardo Pimentel, editorial page editor

  • JACKSON, Ga. - Georgia inmate Troy Davis has been executed for the killing of an off-duty police officer in a case that has drawn worldwide support over his claims of innocence. Courts consistently ruled against him, however, and the officer's family says they finally have justice after 22 years. The Supreme Court late Wednesday rejected an 11th-hour request to block the execution of Troy Davis, who convinced hundreds of thousands of people but not the justice system of his innocence in the murder of an off-duty police officer.

... why government can't be trusted with the power over life and death," she said. About 10 counterde...
