  • I had one of the best cups of coffee of my life recently at Four Barrel Coffee in San Francisco. Smooth, robustly flavored, with hardly any acidity -- you can bet I savored it to the very last drop. This terrific coffee was brewed using the "pour over" method, in which coffee is ground on the spot, placed in a cone filter, "bloomed" with a special pour, and then brewed and filtered. It takes two to three minutes to make a cup this way, and it's all the rage at finer coffee shops. But it's not hard to duplicate at home, even without a lot of fancy equipment.

  • POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. - A powerful storm system that spawned a deadly tornado in Arkansas caused rivers to swell Tuesday across the Midwest, straining levees that protect thousands of homes and forcing panicked residents of one town to flee for higher ground. Six inches of rain fell Monday alone in the southeastern Missouri community of Poplar Bluff, bringing the four-day total to 15 inches. The deluge caused the Black River to pour over a levee in 30 places and to break through in one spot, and about 1,000 homes were evacuated.

  • The job of a city council member is no cushy position - long meetings, griping constituents and an obligation to pour over pages of complex budget documents go along with the territory. But that didn't deter Dirk Voetberg - who continued to participate whenever he could even after he was diagnosed with acute leukemia in July. His death last week was both unexpected and a loss for the city.

  • A simple glance at the grocery store aisle will tell you that there are about 5,639 different types of tea out there. You might find it interesting that all true tea comes from one single plant, and different varieties are created by different ways of processing the leaves. Herbal blends are not actually teas by definition. This is all well and good, but when it comes to hot water you pour over some sort of withered up leaf, the outcome is usually the same: a hot beverage served best when with a friend.

  • Psssst!" Urgent tapping on his shoulder. Expecting to be admonished for drinking, he whirls around to face an angry blue-hair. "Don't pour over the label! "I said, don't pour over the label. It simply isn't done!" CORKS: Dogs sniff corks. People look at them. Compare the name of the cork with the label to make sure that the bottle didn't come from some back alley along with a load of Chinese "Rolex" watches. Look to see if there is any evidence of wine leaking out (indicating air has gotten in). Clear crystals on the cork are tartaric acid crystals, and are harmless.

  • Plums also add sassy flavor to bread puddings, and when pureed, sweetened and simmered, add zest to a canister of homemade ice cream, a cool summer treat. For a delicious barbecue sauce, puree several peeled and pitted plums, stir in crushed garlic, a teaspoon or so of chopped herb, a couple tablespoons of honey or maple syrup, and a splash of rum or bourbon. Swab on chicken, pork or beef for boss flavor. And the fruit combines well with raisins and a splash of vinegar for plum chutney. Select medium-size firm but fully ripe unblemished plums that are free of bruises. Place the fruit in the kitchen sink or basin. Bring a kettle of water to boil and pour over the fruit. Let the fruit remain in the hot water and then bring another kettle of water to boil. Drain the fruit and pour over the...

  • Charleston native Elizabeth Haddad no longer has to ask for sips of her moms coffee as she did when she was 7 and curious about the mysterious brew. Now 24 and living in New York, she can savor a delicious cup any time she wishes. And though Haddad says she usually sticks to about three cups a day, coffee is her passion and she hopes it soon will be her lifes work. However, Haddad said readers soon see she is intent upon exploring the culture of coffee from all corners of New York to well beyond already she has visited Costa Rica and plans a trip to Italy in May. A graduate of Charleston Catho...

  • My favorite French food is still those pork dishes," she says, voice full of enthusiasm. "Andouillettes, a pot of white beans made with sausage and goose known as cassoulet, and choucroute, which is cabbage and pork or ham hocks. Pork may be out of favor with many Black Americans, but I love it. That's soul food to me. Set the bowl on the counter and sift the flour over the beaten eggs. With the spatula, carefully fold into the batter, using only several strokes. Stir the melted butter briskly and pour over the batter. Then fold the butter into the batter until thoroughly blended, lifting the batter from the sides and bottom of the bowl. Don't beat the batter after adding the flour. Soul Note: Many other recipes inspired by travel in Paris are featured in my cookbooks, "Soul Food" and...

  • In a bowl, stir together the flour, cornmeal and baking soda. Make a well in the center and add the buttermilk, honey, eggs and 2 tablespoons oil. Stir until flour is just moistened. Pour over the sausages. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, margarine and soy milk. Stir in the flour, salt and pepper. Pour over the beer mixture and mix well.
