Maine's small-scale egg producers say they expect to benefit from the nationwide scare over a salmonella outbreak that has sickened more than 1,000 people in several states. People are a little bit hesitant about buying at the grocery store" because of last week's recall of hundreds of millions from egg producers in Iowa, said Gary Balducci, president of the Maine Poultry Growers Association, which includes about 40 small producers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) is amending the regulations issued under the Packers and Stockyards Act, 1921, as amended and supplemented (P&S Act). GIPSA is amending the regulations to clarify conditions for industry compliance with the P&S Act pursuant to the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 (the 2008 Farm Bill). AUGUSTA - University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Maine Alternative Poultry Association will sponsor a training afternoon for poultry producers from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Augusta Civic Center. Jacqueline Jacob from University of Minnesota's Extension Service will lead the workshop. It will begin with a half-hour business meeting led by the association president, Gary Balducci.

FORT RECOVERY - Ron and Kasey Schwieterman of Schwieterman Egg Farm in Mercer County recently received one of seven Environmental Stewardship Awards at a ceremony in the Statehouse Atrium in Columbus. The awards are sponsored by Ohio Cattlemen's Association, Ohio Corn Growers Association, Ohio Pork Producers Council, Ohio Poultry Association, Ohio Dairy Producers, Ohio Sheep Improvement Association and Ohio Soybean Association.
