If you read only one book between now and the end of the year, read this one. It will change the way you think about taxation. Common sense, clearly stated, jumps off nearly every one of its 158 pages of text (not counting several useful appendixes).
Publisher Steve Forbes is no newcomer to the idea of a flat tax that would do away with the 9-million-word federal tax code, filled as it is with deductions, credits, exemptions, brackets and confusion. The flat tax is simplicity itself. It would, he writes, "eliminate the possibility of setting up complicated tax avoidance schemes." He quotes former House Majority Leader Dick Armey as saying, "The flat tax would have a chilling effect on the lobbying industry and would transform the political culture in Washington.

This paper offers a critique of the ideas of the "transnational capitalist class" and "transnational state" advanced by William Robinson. It argues that the concepts and their theoretical underpinning are fundamentally flawed, and therefore that the idea of the "transnational state" should be abandoned.

According to the Jeff Beaman, a spokesman for Idaho Power, the company opted in January 2005 to give [Jan Packwood] a raise to put him more in line with other utility executives. With 452,431 customers in their 24,000 square-mile service area, Idaho Power is Idaho's largest regulated utility. Packwood didn't get a raise in 2003 or 2004 because of "difficult financial years," company reports say, where the utility didn't do so well because of several factors that include the ongoing drought. This year, high waters in the rivers doubled the utility's ability to generate energy, according to a prepared statement by Packwood when he announced his company's glowing first quarter 2006 results.

[...] through bringing the later ethico-political philosophy of Albert Camus in The Rebel into an engagement with the more widely known ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, I will contest the lasting silence concerning Camus's political philosophy in philosophical literature.1 Secondly, I argue that Camus's account of political subjectivity in L'Homme Revolte decisively anticipates that later expounded by Levinas.

Here is a short list of reminders: * Remember to use quotes around phrases - "wireless card" will get dramatically different results from searching for the same words without quotes. * Remember to include the type of operating system you are using, usually Mac, OS X, Windows, Ubuntu, or Linux will work fine here. When I've done Snow Leopard searches, I removed sites that included the word "wildlife," which limited up my results considerably. * Remember that Google's index of rapidly changing sites may not be as up-to-date as the site's internal search engine; try using both and comparing. * Consider using words such as "community" or "forums" as part of your search strategy. * Lastly, prepare yourself for the possibility that the best advice you may get on a particular topic may come f...

Here's one possibility: "I'm sorry." Here's another: "I know you're unhappy. Can I help?" Here's a third: "I was wrong.
OK, so your 5-year-old's room is a mess even after the third time you've thundered to him about cleaning it up. Are you really going to ground him or let the Saturday afternoon slip away," simply to make a point? What do you want on your tombstone when you die _ "He made sure his kids' toys were picked up"?
