Like its acclaimed predecessor The Elementary Particles (1998), Michel Houellebecq'a latest novel projects an evolutionary future in which homo sapiens have been surpassed. The seeds of that future lie in a series of events witnessed by Daniel-a misanthropic, iconoclastic, and world-famous comedian on the brink of old age and sexual decline. As with Houellebecq's other narrators, Daniel's story reads like a reductio ad absurdum of Schopenhauer, Darwin, and Freud.

The result is a complete surprise, a record that is a gumbo whose main ingredients are "The Idiot"-era Iggy, later Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart and, believe it or not, Antonio Carlos J...

First day in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and "Cuando caliente el sol aqui en la playa" is playing in my head: "when the sun is hot here on the beach." It was an "our song" years ago another man, not my husband, one I wisely didn't marry and it remains evocative of youth and love and promise.
This is a fantasy trip. On this trip, I am not a tourist but someone contemplating a move to this island. Once, in my childhood, such contemplation was the real deal. I was 8, and my parents and I lived for a month at the Caribe Hilton as my father explored the possibility of opening an import/export business on the island.

Trimble Private Brokerage might be the most unlikely business in downtown Bangor.
That is, unless you thought you might be able to walk along State Street, meander into No. 6, take the elevator to the fifth floor and investigate the possibility of buying an 18-bedroom, 17th century chateau in Paris, an island in Uganda or a villa in Argentina.
