PORTSMOUTH - John William "Jack" Shafer, 90, passed away Oct. 20, 2010 in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. Jack was born in New York City and was a longtime resident of Portsmouth. He attended Perdue University and later served in World World II as a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. After serving overseas, Jack returned home to his wife and child in Portsmouth where he applied his skills as a civil engineer at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Oceana Air Base, and the Norfolk Air Base. Years later he retired from government service as a division head. Jack was a member of The American Society of Military Engineers.

Virginia State University's junior guard, Marquilla Evans (Portsmouth) has been named CIAA Newcomer of the Week, announced Monda by the CIAA office. Evans recorded a career high 22 points against Virginia Union University on Saturday, Feb. 12.
Evans has become an instant scorer coming off of the Lady Trojans bench averaging 7.6 points per game.

PORTSMOUTH - Winston A. "Dick" Spruill, 62, of the 600 block of Chautauqua Ave., died Monday morning in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. Dick was a native of Norfolk. He retired as a teacher from Portsmouth Public Schools after 35 years.
He was a graduate of I.C. Norcom High School where he was an active member of the Class of 1964. He received an undergraduate degree from Norfolk State University and a graduate degree and CAS from Old Dominion University.
