Portsmouth sheriffs have a knack for news. Making it, that is.
Unfortunately, it's almost never good for the people of Portsmouth when their sheriff's mug is in the paper.

What a year for news - globally, nationally and locally. A lot of big news originated in Portsmouth. This is our list of the top stories, but feel free to write in and let us know which others you think should have made the cut.

It finally came together on a wet, muddy night in Portsmouth, with pieces of the historic steam locomotive dangling from cranes.
First, the 70-ton wheel assembly was lifted off a truck and placed on the railroad tracks here at the newly built Railroad Museum of Virginia. Then the barrel-shaped boiler was hoisted into the night sky and set atop the wheels.

THE FREQUENTLY heard description of Portsmouth as "the region's poorest city" makes me bristle. Even if, in fact, we do have the lowest per capita income, the phrase is negative and gives an unfair impression. After all, who wants to be the "poorest" these days?
People are so fixated on material things that they see nothing else. That's why it causes my blood pressure to soar when news media describe Portsmouth this way.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Nearly one in 10 babies were born addicted to drugs last year in southern Ohio's Scioto County. Rehab admissions for prescription painkiller addictions were five times the national average. In a rare step, the health commissioner declared a public health emergency, something usually reserved for disease outbreaks.
The culprits putting the rural county at the forefront of a burgeoning national problem are not only the people abusing the painkillers, officials say. They blame at least eight area "pill mills" - clinics or doctors that dole out prescription medications like OxyContin with little discretion. At least two health-care providers are facing criminal charges.
