Virginia Beach Girl Scout Junior Troop 394 members recently created and delivered to the pediatric ward at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital 46 "Comfort and Care" bags filled with handmade items including a huggable sock doll, a wooden golf tee game, a re-usable tic-tac-toe game, and a coloring book.The project was part of their Girl Scout Bronze Award.

Dr. Edwin L. Williams II, beloved father, devoted husband, respected surgeon, passed away peacefully in his home in Roanoke on Thursday, June 30, 2011, surrounded by his children. Dr. Williams was born in Christiansburg, Va. on November 30, 1933 to the late Leroy D. Williams and Mary Walters. After high school, he earned a B.S. from VPI. He attended MCV and received his Doctor of Medicine in June 1960. Following a rotating internship he completed his surgical residency at MCV under the direction of the late Dr. David Hume. After residency, he served as Lt. Commander at Portsmouth Naval Hospital during the Viet Nam war. When Dr. Dan Ruane and his wife, Lauren, moved to Portsmouth last year, they bought a condominium in a six-unit building in historic Olde Towne.
Both had liked condo living in Boston before relocating to Hampton Roads for Dan's job as a surgical resident at Portsmouth Naval Hospital.

PORTSMOUTH - Mildred Lassiter Parker, daughter of Jerome and Mary Bulman, both deceased, and wife of Linwood "Juny" Parker, passed away Nov. 10, 2010 as a result of complications after heart surgery. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Donna Lynn. Mile was dearly loved by her family and friends for her cheerful personality and love of fun.
A lifelong resident of Portsmouth, she grew up in the Newtown section of Portsmouth. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and retired with 33 years of experience from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital as an executive secretary. She was a member of Western Branch Baptist Church.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Navy Vice Adm. James Richard Sanderson, 84, passed away Aug. 10, 2010 in Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Vice Admiral Sanderson was born in Selma, Calif., and was the son of the late Charles M. and Edith Sanderson.
He was an Eagle Scout. In 1947, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty B. Sanderson at the U.S. Navy Chapel on Mare Island in Vallejo, Calif. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Milton and Jerry Sanderson.

PORTSMOUTH - Albert Winifred Smelser Jr., 85, formerly of the 4400 block of Columbia St., passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010.
A native of Portsmouth, Albert retired from Seaboard Railroad, then went on to work at Portsmouth Naval Hospital where he retired in 1978 and later worked at the Bide-a-Wee Golf Course in the Pro Shop. He was a proud World War II Army veteran with the 31st Infantry and was a member of DAV Chapter No. 41 and Westhaven Baptist Church. Albert was a member of the Western Branch Masonic Lodge No. 189 for more than 60 years; the Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies; the Khedive Shrine Temple; Portsmouth Shrine Club; past member of the Port Norfolk Royal Arch Chapter and the Legion of Honor with the Khedive Temple. Albert was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara B. Smelser.

PORTSMOUTH - , 83, died Sept. 22, 2010 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was born May 4, 1927, in Centerville, Iowa, one of five children of Russell and Margaret Buss.
She married Robert "Bob" Swan and subsequently moved to Charleston, S.C., where he completed his residency in neurology and began his career as a Navy neurologist. Dr. Swan was transferred to Portsmouth Naval Hospital where he practiced as a neurologist and she volunteered numerous hours for the Navy Relief Society. When he left the Navy to begin a private practice, she managed his medical practice until his death. Not ready to retire, she began a new career in tax preparation, managing a tax return office until her retirement at age 80.

NORFOLK - Phyllis Sperans Rapoport Halpern, 87, passed away peacefully Dec. 17, 2010.
She was born and grew up in New York City where she attended public high school and Columbia University before graduating from Skidmore College. During World War II she was a member of the American Woman's Hospital Reserve Corps, volunteered at a military hospital in Staten Island and was active in war bond sales and blood drives in support of the war effort. After her marriage she moved to Portsmouth in 1945 and was active in her new community by volunteering at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, the Head Start Program and the Girls Club along with helping at the family business, The Quality Shop. She served on the board of directors at Temple Sinai, the American Cancer Society, and as president of Young ...
