The value of goods and services produced in Maine's three major metropolitan areas grew from 2001 to 2005, but at a rate below the national average. Figures from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis for the four- year period show that the value of goods and services - known as the gross domestic product - increased by 9.3 percent in the Portland- South Portland-Biddeford metro area, by 10.7 percent in Lewiston- Auburn and by 5.4 percent in Bangor. The national GDP increased by slightly more than 11 percent during the same period.
The metro area that includes Portland, South Portland and Biddeford has 39 percent of Maine's population, and supports 43 percent of all jobs and 46 percent of the state's economic output. It's also home to 60 percent of the state's high-skilled workers and 47 percent of its residents with post-secondary degrees - residents who can help drive future economic growth.
April contracts for future construction in the metropolitan statistical area of Portland-South Portland- Biddeford - consisting of Cumberland, Sagadahoc and York counties - declined in all categories, compared to the same month a year earlier, according to McGraw-Hill Construction, which tracks the construction market nationwide.
POLAND SPRING Six members of the Maine golf community will be inducted as the class of 2011 of the Maine Golf Hall of Fame at Poland Spring Golf Club on Sept. 15. Helen Plourd of Rockland, Andrew Lano II of Portland, Wilfred Benoit of Norway, Lawrence Rowe of South Portland, Gregory Searle of Biddeford and Michael Verrier of Saco will all be inducted at a formal ceremony at 6 p.m. after a non shotgun scramble tournament and reception/social hour at 5 p.m.
Biddeford began defense of its state championship with a 6-0 victory over South Portland Tuesday night in a Western Class A boys' hockey quarterfinal at Biddeford Ice Arena. Brady Fleurent solidified his status as a terrific playmaker, recording one goal and four assists. Tyler Audie scored two goals, and Stephen Comar, Bryan Dallaire and Scott Callahan also scored for the Tigers.
The Buffalo Niagara region is one of the Top 10 "real estate markets to watch" this year, according to a new report by a national research and information service focused on real estate. Inman News of Alameda, Calif., ranked the Western New York market as one of the "fast-rising real estate markets" nationwide, according to a report on the firm's website. These are housing markets that "are showing signs of strength and may outperform other housing markets in 2011," the report said.
