  • LONDON (Reuters) - Guinea-Bissau is looking to privatize a number of industries including ports and airports and is seeking foreign direct investment in sectors such as tourism and mining, the leader of the country's national assembly said on Wednesday [Nov. 9]. We are very relaxed about full privatization of the airports and ports, we would want to keep a larger stake in strategic areas such as the electricity network, telecoms," Raimundo Pereira, president of the National Popular Assembly, told Reuters in an interview.

  • Venezuelan opponents of President Hugo Chavez cheered Sunday's election results, in which a newly unified opposition gained a significant bloc of seats in the country's National Assembly and apparently a majority of the popular vote. Election officials in Caracas confirmed Monday that the weekend returns had cost the populist Mr. Chavez the two-thirds majority in the legislature that allowed him to govern virtually unhindered for the past five years. His party had won the supermajority after the opposition boycotted the 2005 elections.

  • The opening montage sets the stage for this telling, linking the era of Cold War interventionism to the present day as it ranges over archival footage of Richard Nixon's triumphant arrival in Guatemala City, following the Arbenz coup; Bush I being heckled at a press conference as he lauds U.S.-backed Salvadoran president Alfredo Cristiani for "trying to do a job for democracy"; and Bush II declaring that the United States is not interested in imposing anything on the unwilling, but in helping others "find their own voice." The film's narrative of the coup attempt covers little ground not already covered in the Irish documentary The Revolution Will Not Be Televised-the military-business conspiracy, the fabricated pretext of a massacre supposedly carried out by chavistas, the media's rol...

  • Since the triumph of the revolution I have never felt the sting of racism," [Esteban Lazo Hernandez], who is also head of the Cuban Department of International Relations and a member of the Delegate Committee to Cuba's National Assembly of Popular Power, contended. "In 1963 I started in the party at the age of 19 and nobody has discriminated against me. Our enemies try to say there is racism in Cuba today, but in Cuba the value of a person is worth more than his color. You have the possibility of being someone because the revolution has given opportunities to everyone.

  • Beyond his bid for Prime Minister, Dr. [Azmi Bishara] has tested Israel's so called democracy by speaking out against Israeli terrorism. In June 2001, Bishara sat with Arab leaders at a commemoration service in Qirdaha, the birthplace of Assad senior, one year following the death of the late president. Bishara came representing Balad, the National Democratic Assembly. Also in attendance was Hizbullah's Hassan Nasrallah and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine General Command (PFLP-GC) leader Ahmad Jibril. This invite list was far "beyond the threshold of acceptability for Israeli public officials." An official from Israel's State Attorney's office said, "This was an aberration. Here you had Bishara sitting with Nasrallah and Jibril and Assad, Israel's enemies. And he did it in ...

  • TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey became the second state to enter a compact that would eliminate the Electoral College's power to choose a president if enough states endorse the idea. Gov. Jon S. Corzine signed legislation Sunday that approves delivering the state's 15 electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote. The Assembly approved the bill last month and the Senate followed suit earlier this month.

  • How about the people closest to Chavez or even Chávez himself? I think that to understand where the process may be heading, especially in light of Chávez's impressive electoral victory in December, we can make use of a concept that has been developed by Ernesto Laclau in his book On Populist Reason. Economic integration is an important theme for Latin America right now, and Chávez has used his oil money to good political advantage, helping Argentina out of its financial crisis, for example, by purchasing a major part of its debt, and offering favorable oil deals to countries throughout the Americas. When Chávez spoke of the necessity of a single united party on the left, for example, the smaller parties of the chavista coalition reacted cautiously It was clear they did not like the pr...
