With demand increasing for leasable space in green buildings, it may be surprising that there is no widely accepted definition of a "green" lease. Green buildings offer benefits for owners and tenants. There are numerous green building standards that are now being used in the commercial building industry, but the three most widely used and recognized in the US are Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, Green Globes and ENERGY STAR. An environmental management plan is a document that describes the environmental standards, pollution control measures, performance criteria and practices that a building owner and its tenants will follow to reduce negative impact on the environment. The reasons for the growth of green building include the desire of individuals and local governments to...
WASHINGTON, Jan. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A new study led by a NASA scientist highlights 14 key air pollution control measures that, if implemented, could slow the pace of global warming, improve health and boost agricultural production. Progress on global warming was stalled last week when the Environmental Protection Agency turned down California's request to impose tough greenhouse gas emission standards on cars and trucks sold in the state. California's loss is Maine's as well, since it was one of the dozen states that planned to implement the same standards if the California law went through.
EPA is approving in part and disapproving in part state implementation plan (SIP) revisions submitted by California to provide for attainment of the 1997 fine particulate matter (PM) national ambient air quality standards in the San Joaquin Valley (SJV). These SIP revisions are the SJV 2008 PM Plan (revised 2010 and 2011) and SJV-related provisions of the 2007 State Strategy (revised 2009 and 2011). EPA is approving the emissions inventory, the reasonably available control measures/reasonably available control technology demonstration, reasonable further progress demonstration, attainment demonstration and associated air quality modeling, and the transportation conformity motor vehicle emissions budgets. EPA is also granting California's request to extend the attainment deadline for the...

EPA is approving state implementation plan (SIP) revisions submitted by California to provide for attainment of the 1997 8-hour ozone national ambient air quality standards in the San Joaquin Valley (SJV). These SIP revisions are the 2007 Ozone Plan (revised 2008 and 2011) and SJV-related portions of the 2007 State Strategy (revised 2009 and 2011). EPA is approving the base year emissions inventory, reasonably available control measures demonstration, provisions for transportation control strategies and measures, provisions for advanced technology/clean fuels for boilers, reasonable further progress (RFP) and attainment demonstrations, transportation conformity motor vehicle emissions budgets for all RFP milestone years and the attainment year, contingency measures for failure to make R...

Virginia's candidates for governor clashed over transportation, the economy and equal rights for women and gays in their first televised debate Monday night, an exchange in which Democrat Creigh Deeds accused Republican Bob McDonnell of lying about his record and policy positions. Trailing in the polls, Deeds reacted aggressively when McDonnell painted him as a tax-raiser and attempted to link the Democrat with federal labor and pollution-control measures moving through Congress. McDonnell lit the spark on the debate's first question, saying Deeds supports $1 billion in new taxes for transportation.
At least mercury pollution from U.S. coal-fired power plants may be on the way down. In February, a Washington, D.C., appeals court shot down the Environmental Protection Agency's controversial mercury pollution trading scheme, which the agency set up in 2005 in lieu of broader mercury limits. The court also toppled an agency rule that had removed coal-fired power plants from a list of industries that must use the best achievable pollution-control measures. Now, new plants must install equipment to control mercury, arsenic, lead, chromium and other toxic emissions in accordance with the Clean Air Act. That could spell trouble for proposed coal-fired power plants - including the Desert Rock in New Mexico and Toquop in Nevada, as well as at least six others in the West - by upping project...
Inland Southern California's air quality has improved dramatically over the past 30 years thanks in part to stringent vehicle emission standards and market incentives that prompted factories to implement pollution control measures. But more can be done to clean up our air and conserve resources
