Let's be clear, our current term limits law has created a broken political system in California. Instead of developing a firm grasp on the issues in their current office, politicians instead are constantly campaigning for their next office.
I've often said that politicians and the general public tend not to focus on transportation infrastructure issues until they become a crisis. Last week, the issue of transportation percolated to the very top of the nation's chain of command when President Barack Obama proposed a new $50 billion round of tactical federal spending on transportation infrastructure.

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) -- It might be time to stop referring to China, the world's second-biggest economy after the United States, as an emerging nation and focus on creating jobs now that the global recovery appears to have gotten a toehold. That's what top business leaders, politicians and social activists discussed, among other issues, on the first day of the World Economic Forum today.
MADISON, Wis. - Republican Gov. Scott Walker and state education superintendent Tony Evers, a pair of politicians who have fought bitterly in the past year on issues ranging from vouchers to the union rights of teachers, are uniting to create a new system that will hold all publicly funded schools in Wisconsin accountable for their success. The idea is to create a system that can replace the rules of the federal No Child Left Behind law, which Walker and Evers agree are ineffective. It's a step taken by a number of other states, including Idaho and Kentucky, and one both men say they're excited to take together.
What community, wonders Barry Zack, executive director of Centerforce, a San Rafael-based organization that provides services for prisoners and their families. "This isn't a Marin-only issue," he says. "Who is Marin to discuss this [by and for itself]? This is a Bay Area issue." Zack says San Quentin plays a big part in reducing recidivism of prisoners who live in the Bay Area and end up behind bars at the prison. "Eighty percent of the prisoners who leave San Quentin stay in the Bay Area," says Zack. The reason is simple: They have family and friends and support services, like Centerforce, here. And, says Zack, when politicians figure the costs of operating prisons, they don't take into account the costs of increased recidivism of prisoners from the Bay Area who will end up in p...

Sometimes people say that it doesn't matter who's president, that politicians are all the same. On issues from torture to bailouts, there's no question that Republicans are not calling the shots any more. Whether you think President Barack Obama and the Democrats are overreaching, or whether you believe that they're making a course correction, there's no disputing that it's a different day.
Five men with business careers - four of whom are seeking office for the first time - are running to replace longtime City Councilman Tom Marshall, who has declined to seek re-election in Super District 9, Position 2. They agree on the basic issues like most politicians: Reduce crime, erase blight, improve the quality of life for all citizens.
I am running because I want to put forward a working-class alternative to the agendas of Democrats and Republicans," said [William Leonard]. "We have seen that politicians aren't working on behalf of the people on issues like housing, hopelessness and employment. Leonard has also made his voice heard on local issues. As recently as June, he addressed a Boston City Council hearing to share his opposition to the controversial Safe Homes Initiative, a "consent-to-search" program in which Boston police officials ask parents in high-crime neighborhoods to allow detectives to enter their homes without a warrant to search for weapons in children's bedrooms. He also supports reform of the state's Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) law. "Residents in our community shouldn't be treated...
Daily Trust learned that invitations to the meeting with [Hillary Clinton] were sent to an unconfirmed number of top opposition politicians, including former Head of State Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, both of who contested but lost the 2007 presidential elections to President Umaru Yar'adua. Clinton also also attended a town hall meeting at the Yar'adua Centre, after having bilateral talks with President Umaru Yar'adua at the State House. We'd like to see greater improvement in their electoral performance ... which will help strengthen their democracy. We'd also like them to address issues of corruption and transparency," [Johnnie Carson] had said, adding the U.S. goal was not to "lecture" African governments.
