  • Candidates for every office are asking voters to come out to the polls in less than a month, but some have spotty records of getting to the polls themselves. The list of who votes and who doesn't is almost relative to a politician's experience. Incumbents with the longest tenures, such as House Speaker Michael E. Busch, D-Annapolis and Del. Barbara Frush, D-Beltsville, have perfect records of voting in the last 12 elections. Sen. John C. Astle, D-Annapolis, and Del. Joan Cadden, D- Brooklyn Park, only missed one election each.

  • The Washington Times titled its profile of Ryan "The Thinker," highlighting his expansive "Roadmap for America's Future." This "Roadmap," rolled out last May, packages the latest ideas from right-wing think tanks, presenting pro-corporate aims in language stressing individual choice. These include: [Conor Sweeney Ryan] says Ryan and other Republicans in Congress did not simply oppose [Barack Obama]'s "deeply flawed bill." They proposed an alternative economic recovery plan that included infrastructure investments and "a fast-acting tax policy." But critics say Ryan's roadmap, especially with regard to taxes, represents a continuation of failed past policies and is thus ill-suited for this moment in history, especially in Ryan's deeply suffering district. • Years ago, I worked as a reporter in Las Vegas, trying daily to dig through the tinsel to find real substance. I dealt a lot with public records. Some of these were arrest records. Some were voting records. Others had to do with marriages or with the ownership of real property. Each one could be a snapshot holding clues to a larger picture. I considered it a great day, for example, if I discovered that a politician hadn't voted in the last election, or if I learned that a public official was delinquent in his or her taxes. That kind of information served a public purpose. It gave voters information that could provide insights into the character of a politician.

  • Democrat Tammy Baldwin is the first woman that Wisconsin has elected to Congress, and the first openly lesbian politician that any state has sent to Congress. In 6 years with the Wisconsin legislature, Rep Baldwin has reached 100% voting records from labor and environmental groups. She is a proponent of universal health care and federal hate crime legislation.

  • The Supreme Court has held that an individual relinquishes any Fourth Amendment interest in information that he or she voluntarily discloses to a third party. Known as the "Third Party Doctrine," this controversial rule is increasingly problematic in an age where a large proportion of personal communications and transactions are carried out over the Internet. Internet users expose virtually all of the information they generate online-e-mails, web-surfing histories, search terms, and more-to online service providers. As such, many scholars have assumed that Internet information will be unprotected by the Fourth Amendment. Yet the information disclosed to these online third parties is generally not exposed to human beings at all; rather, it is processed entirely by automated equipment. Ne...

  • ST. JOSEPH -- In an eight-page letter to Congressman James Rollins that he marked "confidential," Brig. Gen. Odon Guitar revealed his bitterness over abolitionist attacks and his conflicted feelings about upholding anti-slavery policies. Guitar, a Columbia attorney, was commander of the Seventh Military District in northwest Missouri. Rollins, a wealthy Columbia landowner, lawyer and politician, was his close friend. "You have no doubt seen & heard the attacks made upon me by the malignant sheet here and of course understand and appreciate the malice of the whole thing," Guitar wrote.
