  • As the campaign season heats up and promises fly, I am reminded of the definition of a politician given to me by a colleague a generation ago. "A politician is someone who taxes the minority to buy the votes of the majority and thereby perpetuate himself in office. Ralph M. Horton

  • Too late to cover tracks Re "At oil spill hearings, a day of apologies, not many answers," news, June 18: One definition of a political gaffe is "a politician telling the truth or saying exactly what he thinks.

  • Politics, it's said, is the art of the possible. Small wonder, then, that most politicians leave such small footprints. After all, the "possible" is, by definition, achievable. To leave a mark on history, a politician must do the seemingly impossible. John F. Kennedy left a mark by slashing tax rates in the 1960s, as did Ronald Reagan, who simultaneously won the Cold War and restored America's economy by reducing the burden of government.

  • Again, I suspect because of his views that you decried in a past "Winners and Losers," you have called a bill sponsored by Rep. Kraig Powell as a "loser." Such a call-out, especially when done multiple times, can associate a name -- not just his ideas -- as a loser. I know Powell. He is not a loser. While I may not agree with him on every point, he is an honest, hard-working, ethical and conscientious husband, father, church worker, lawyer and politician. For me, he's the definition of a "winner." The real loser is your column that calls anything you disagree with a "loser." That is uncivil, unkind, incomplete, unbalanced and often just not true. I am not a Deseret News hater. Much of what you do is good. Just lose the loser piece, or tell the whole story. Rob Lange

  • During the ice storms of 2007, a Cherokee Nation volunteer delivered water to a rural Delaware County fire station isolated by the storm. With no fanfare, the volunteer made the delivery and left. No one was aware that it was Principal Chief Chad Smith.

  • Once again, Americans are getting an education in word definition from a ranking politician. And as before, the latest explanation stretches the limits of believability. Former President Bill Clinton raised convolution to an art form while dissembling about what the meaning of "is" is.

  • The president seems to harbor this burning desire to be loved by everyone. If that's all he wanted, he should have become an entertainer instead of a politician. In politics, the people are looking lor a father figure who is fair, but also bad enough to protect them from harm, and President [Barack Obama] is not demonstrating that capacity. In fact, from what he's shown so far, he seems to be more adept at taking the coward's way out. Everyone knows the type - the kind of guy that's always running up to the bullies trying to become their best friend so they won't get beat up. Instead, Obama's acting like that Black cop that we in the Black community know so well-the one who's so sensitive about being accused of coddling Black people that he goes out of his way to be more insensitive tha...

  • The term 'neoliberalism' has since around 1980 become a quite widely used exhortation in some political and academic debates. Prolific employment of a term does not signify, however, that it is clearly defined. In this article it is suggested that while the concept itself has become an imprecise buzzword in much of the literature, it might still be given a more precise definition. If this is done, then the term could become a useful analytical device in order to describe some recent trends in economic thought and political theory, even if it would be an obvious overstatement to say that we live in a neoliberal age or a neoliberal world.

  • Not many people noticed, but a couple of weeks ago, a handful of Republican contenders for president gathered to debate in Greenville, S.C. It was a motley crew. They reminded one observer of the aliens in the bar scene from "Star Wars. The president is supposed to have the most powerful job on Earth, and that might be true. But these days, it's also a position that few people of real substance want. Judging by the ragtag group in the running, the presidency is more like a consolation prize than a cherished aspiration.
