  • You don't need a fortune cookie to learn that China isn't playing straight with the rest of the world. The men in Beijing may be taking some of their clues from the most important page of Mao Tse- tung's Little Red Book: "Every Communist must grasp the truth, 'Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.' We've been lulled into thinking the Chinese brand of "free markets" will move that country toward democracy. Maybe someday, eventually, it will. But free markets must be accompanied by personal freedoms and representative government, and that isn't happening. In fact, there are disturbing signs of a military build- up and deception about it at the highest levels of the Chinese government today.

  • Shirk, who was a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State engaged in Sino-US relations during the Clinton Administration, quotes an unnamed Chinese source: Public opinion about Taiwan has been created by 50 years of CCP propaganda. If the United States declared China the enemy in a new Cold War and tried to tie an economic noose around it, China's economic growth and job creation would be slowed and domestic problems would mount.

  • Those of us living in the Rocky Mountain region are steeped in America's famous gun culture - and we therefore know well the binary debates surrounding the Second Amendment. Firearm enthusiasts - the vast majority of whom use weapons responsibly - believe the Constitution protects their right to bear arms. Gun control advocates counter that the Constitution doesn't give anyone the inalienable right to wield automatic weapons that can kill scores of people in seconds. This is the stultified freedom-versus-safety quarrel that seemed to forever define gun politics - that is, until anti-government activists started bringing firearms to public political meetings.

  • In the Dec. 9 article on the House's passing the DREAM Act ("Dream is still alive"), I couldn't believe what I was reading! The last paragraph read, "Some said it would allow even the most dangerous criminals and terrorists to become citizens." This is not clear; what did your writer mean by "some?" The lack of attribution to a credible source diminishes the newspaper's credibility. As a critical consumer of news media, I need to know who would say such a thing. According to the text of the DREAM Act of 2010 (H.R. 6497), a student's conduct will be taken into account to be considered for eligibility for residency. The bill clearly states that no one who has been convicted of a major crime will be eligible. The law explicitly excludes "criminals and terrorists.
