- Barrick Gold Makes Unsolicited Offer for Novagold Resources
Barrick Gold has made an unsolicited takeover offer of $14.50 per share, or $1.53 billion, for NovaGold Resources Inc. In conjunction with the deal, Barrick Gold is also offering to acquire Pioneer Metals for C64.7 million. Barrick's offer is intended to supercede a hostile offer for Pioneer Metals made by NovaGold. Barrick and NovaGold also currently operate a joint venture, the Donlin Creek project. NovaGold's management has described Barrick's takeover offer as opportunistic and stated that the offer undervalues NovaGold's portfolio of gold and copper assets. If successful, the acquisition will give Barrick Gold considerable assets in Alaska and Canada, including full ownership of the Donlin Creek project.
